There's nothing like hopping in your RV and going exploring to put you in the summer mood. Between its natural features, exciting events, intriguing museums, good food, and fun shops, northern Texas is a great place to find adventure. This guide will help you know how to prepare for and plan the best Texas RV road trip.

Getting Ready

Before hitting the road, make sure your RV is ready for a big trip. Be sure to:

  • Check the tire pressure and tread.

  • Inspect the engine fluids, such as oil, coolant, and brake fluid.

  • Test the RV's electrical systems, including lights and batteries.

  • Double check all moving parts of your RV and make sure everything seems clean and in good repair.

  • Fill up the gas tank.

What to Bring

Now it's time to pack! Get stocked up on all necessary RV road trip supplies and equipment for your adventure. Here are just a few things you'll want to be sure and throw in:

  • Sufficient clothing and personal care items

  • Cooking supplies

  • Ingredients for meals and snacks

  • Any needed gear for activities you plan to do (hiking boots, rock climbing harnesses, camp chairs, a good book, etc.)

  • Necessary RV care items (e.g., water and sewer hoses, pressure regulator, septic chemicals, wheel chocks, etc.)

When to Go

Texas weather can be a bit of a mixed bag, so it's important to be thoughtful about when you start your road trip. Always do some research and take a look at the forecast to make sure it's safe to travel.

Summer travel can be advantageous due to longer travel days, more events going on, and more free/vacation time. However, Texas summers are infamously hot. If you do decide to take a trip during summer, be prepared with ways to cool down (water, breaks in air conditioned establishments, etc.) and get tips from locals.

Fall and spring temperatures are generally more bearable, and many recommend October to December as the ideal RV road trip time. The Texan flowers are said to be particularly beautiful from March to early June, but beware of extreme weather (rain, ice storms, tornados) during this time.

Where to Go

Here comes the best part—putting together your itinerary and choosing what sights you'll see! Here are some of our favorite things to do on a Texas RV road trip.

Klyde Warren Park - Dallas

Known as the town square of Texas, Klyde Warren Park hosts a wide variety of free activities and events. Check their schedule to see what's going on when you'll be stopping by—you're sure to find something fun for everyone.

Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza - Dallas

This stop is perfect for the history buffs. The museum is located at the JFK assassination site. It offers an explanation of the political climate of the era and a timeline of the events that took place on November 22, 1963.

Hot Springs National Park - Hot Springs, AK

If you're not opposed to venturing out-of-state, Hot Springs National Park is well worth the stop. Located a little over 4 hours out of Dallas, the park offers a wide variety of hikes, hot pools, and wildlife to enjoy.

National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame - Fort Worth

For a very quintessential Texas experience, check out the National Cowgirl Museum & Hall of Fame. The museum is great for both adults and children, and it honors women of the West who were outstanding examples of bravery, independence, and pioneering.

Burger's Lake - Fort Worth

When you're ready to cool off, head to Burger's Lake. Complete with waterslides, diving boards, picnic tables, and a snack bar, the lake is your one-stop-shop for a fun afternoon.

Magnolia Table Restaurant and Magnolia Market - Waco

Don't miss a chance to try the famous food of everyone's favorite Texas couple—the Gaines's restaurant serves delectable breakfast and lunch. Once you're full, check out the shops at Magnolia Market, located a few minutes away.

Staying Safe

Whatever route you decide to take, make sure you and your adventure crew stay safe on your RV road trip. Remember to drive carefully and allow for extra space when changing lanes, turning, and parking. Be attentive to any maintenance you may need to take care of on the road.

Take good care of yourself by drinking plenty of water and taking time to relax in cool places to beat the dense Texas heat.
